Tips & Techniques of the Pros

Take your paintings from "Ehhh" to Amazing

(1 Day Workshop; All Skill Levels)

Powerful paintings have things in common that you may not realize.   Did you know that "round" objects appear more solid and dynamic when drawn with a series of straight lines instead of curves?  Have you heard that applying paint thinly in dark areas and more thickly ("impasto") in light areas can create depth and visual interest?   Here's another one: "link" your light areas (and your darks areas) to prevent spottiness and to lead the viewer's eye around the canvas.  In this one day slide presentation, you will learn these techniques (and many more) and how to use them to take your painting to the next level.  Small changes can equal big results!

Paint Your Portrait

(3 Day Workshop; Beginner to Intermediate)

Do you have a photo of a loved one (perhaps a grandchild, a cherished pet, or even yourself on a Harley Davidson) that you would love to paint?  Would you like to have help and guidance while you paint so that you can feel confident and proud of your results?  In this three day workshop, Victoria will guide you through every step of the process from selecting your photo, to sketching it on canvass, painting it, and framing the finished painting.  All skill levels welcome.

Understanding Color

(5 Day Workshop; Intermediate to Advanced)

Imagine you are the conductor of an orchestra.  Your job is to direct each instrument (or each section) when to play, how loudly or softly to play, and at what tempo.  Some sections will play the melody while others play the harmony.  If you do your job well, you will get music, perhaps Beethoven's 9th. If you just randomly wave your baton, hoping for the best, you will get loud, confusing noise.  The same is true for painting.  Painters must understand when to use a color, how loudly or softly to use it and how often to repeat it. In this workshop, you will gain a deeper understanding of the nature of color, how our eyes (and brains) see color and how to use color to your maximum advantage.  This is not a class where I give you recipes on how to mix "flesh tones," nor is it a class where we just study color wheels.  Each morning will start with a slide show and demo focusing on one aspect of color. The rest of the day students will create an abstract painting using tempera, gouache or colored paper focusing on that one aspect of color.  Why do we do abstracts? So students don't have to worry about drawing -- we just focus on color!  The class is taught from a realist/impressionist perspective, so all lessons are directly applicable to representational art.
